Carson City, State of Nevada
Start Date:
June 2002
End Date:
October 2009
Description: The Marlette-Hobart Water Supply System is an historical system of impoundments originally developed in the 1870's to transmit water to the Comstock region of Nevada. An important component to the overall system is the water that is pumped out of Marlette Lake which provides the Carson City area with this important resource. Marlette Lake is also used by Nevada Division of Wildlife (NDOW) to breed rainbow trout. In addition, tts rugged beauty has made it one of the most popular recreational areas in Northern Nevada, and is visited year-round for hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking, or cross country skiing. In 2003 CWSD received a grant from USEPA to improve the distribution system out of Marlette Lake to be environmentally compatible with the surrounding area. By summer 2006, CWSD completed the environmental assessment (EA) on the preferred alternatives of natural gas, electric or bore hole. After the environmental assessment and cost projections were completed, natural gas was deemed to be the best alternative. Construction began in 2007, and by fall, a new 12” pipeline with power and communication raceways had been installed from the pump can to Hobart Creek. Crews were busy in summer 2008 adding several different components to the system. A house was built for the massive generator. A natural gas line was connected from Paiute Gas Company’s pipeline at Musgrove to the generator building at the summit above Marlette Lake. An electric line was installed from the generator to the lakeside pump. Finally, the 600’ intake pipe was buried from the pump can into the lake. The project was finalized in 2009; summer began with preparations for the arrival for the generator that would power the system. Drainage improvements alongside the road as well as two culverts on the steep slope from Hobart Reservoir to the generator house were completed. Not only did these culverts eliminate the mud that would hinder the generators’ progress, but will also serve to limit future erosion. After a test run up the mountain, a truck carrying the massive generator crawled to the generator house. A crane, which had preceded the truck, was waiting to unload and place the generator into its home. Throughout the summer, the generators’ installation was completed. Then the system was started up and tested to ensure its smooth operation. A pipeline capable of carrying 1,500 gpm of water from Marlette Lake to the generator is now operational. With these upgrades, this new system is fully automated. Trips to Marlette Lake to fuel the diesel pump, repair an aging pipeline, or adjust water flows have been eliminated. Instead, system controls are accessed at the Marlette Water System office in Carson City. Now, transporting water from Marlette Lake to the Quill Water System plant in Carson City is done with greater ease. So many components have come together to make this project possible, and CWSD is pleased to have been a part of the process. A celebration was held to recognize all who had a hand in the completion of this six-year, multi-million dollar project.
